Slavery in Relgion
Throughout history slavery has taken place in all religions. Although slavery was condoned for several years throughout the religions it doesn’t mean that it was meant to be or everyone agreed with it. In religions like Islam, Christianity, and Judaism slavery has been there for thousands of years. People have tried to bend the rules and view slavery as something that should happen, that it is meant to be and that’s what their God has told them to do. But reading through the religious texts from those three religions you can see that that’s not what was meant to happen. Their God intended for their people to be equal and parts that do talk about owning slaves make it clear that they should treat their slaves respectfully and should not hurt them. A complete halt to slavery was not something that was able to be accomplished but restrictions were put into place.
In Islam for years they tried to deal with he issue of slavery. Their approach to moderating slavery the idea the freedom was a natural state of affairs for human beings and this limited the ways and opportunities to enslave people. Slaves were allowed to have their freedom also if one was to free a slave it would be a virtuous act. As well as banning the mistreatment of slaves, they are supposed to be treated with kindness.
In the Bible there are many verses that do not condemn slavery and have rules to make the treatment of slaves kind and punish people who harm their slaves. “When a man strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys it, he shall let the slave go free because of his eye. If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he shall let the slave go free because of his tooth.”Exodus 21:26-27 . Also it explains how everyone is equal and under one Jesus Christ, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”Galatians 3:28. So this means that in Christianity that all people are the same under the same god. That others shouldn't be treated differently for they all are the same.
There are lots of rules in the torah setting several boundaries on slavery, for example, masters are not allowed to rule harshly over their slave or treat them poorly. “A fugitive slave must not be turned over to his master but given refuge (duet: 23:16). “ (see Jewish concepts slavery). Also masters after being a slave for 6 years you were freed the 7th. Slaves are also considered members of the masters household and they also may inherit the property of their master.
